The Challenge

LIU set out to create a world-class recording environment where students could learn and produce using the same professional acoustic standards found in commercial studios. The facility needed to support accurate monitoring, balanced acoustic response, and architectural polish, all inside an educational space with constant turnover of users.

WSDG’s design incorporated natural light, clean finishes, and visual transparency between rooms. Achieving precise control of reflections and reverberation, while keeping every system fully integrated into the aesthetic, would require custom solutions and careful acoustic engineering.

Multiple rooms demanded different performance goals:

• A large control room requiring mix accuracy
• A live room supporting varied instrumentation
• Isolation booths needing intimacy without coloration

RPG was engaged to deliver high-performance systems that could achieve professional sonic excellence across all spaces.

The Solution

RPG collaborated closely with WSDG and the installation team to supply custom-fit acoustic treatments designed to shape the studio sound and elevate the interior architecture.

Products were selected to balance broadband absorption and diffusion, ensuring clarity, warmth, and accurate translation from recording to mixdown. Every component was engineered to visually align with the studio’s modern design language:

• Dado absorptive wood ceiling clouds were integrated with the lighting and audio playback installed at the control room ceiling above the mixing and listening positions.
• Modviewsor transparent sound diffusers were installed at the critical center rear wall location to not only provide broadband diffusion but also serve as a window for passersby to view what goes on during a recording session.
• Perfecto® Micro custom-shaped clouds were integrated with custom angled linear lighting modules to create not only a balanced live recording environment acoustically but a very unique and powerful visual aesthetic as well.

A dedicated RPG project manager coordinated with fabrication and delivery schedules to ensure materials arrived ready for installation, reducing field time and maintaining progress on the tight academic build timeline.

The Challenge

The Canopy Hotel at Wills Wharf wanted to create a unique and beautiful meeting space that transcended a typical hotel aesthetic in the market area. The goal was to create a visually stunning and formal environment with views of the harbor while also ensuring the room provided enhanced acoustic quality. The design required a unique ceiling shape that could be installed efficiently in order to meet the project’s demanding timeline. 

The Solution

RPG Acoustics provided the perfect solution with its Perfecto® Micro Planks for the first-floor conference center. This product was chosen for this project because of its versatility and superior performance. The plank system has a unique design that allows for custom and non-traditional ceiling shapes. The system was also engineered to install into a standard 15/16 Heavy Duty T-Grid, provided by the contractor, which significantly streamlined the installation process.

Key Successes 

The project successfully delivered a visually and acoustically exceptional space. The RPG Perfecto® Micro Planks achieved the specific aesthetic goals of Canopy Hotels while also creating a room that can handle and control conversations. The quick installation of the plank system ensured the project stayed on schedule. 

The most notable success, however, was of course the acoustic performance! RPG’s Perfecto® Micro-Perforation technology creates spaces that don’t get too loud but don’t feel quiet. By targeting the mid-range frequencies, the system keeps the space in perfect balance for conversation and presentation. The Challenge

A high-profile auditorium, designed as the centerpiece for an academic campus in Washington, DC, required premium acoustic treatments that seamlessly blended with the complex architectural design, including radiused walls. The project had an aggressive schedule, leaving no room for error.

Many manufacturers offered only micro-perforated panels, excluding trims and the essential radiused blocking needed for the curved design. This created significant challenges for installation. RPG addressed these issues by providing not only the acoustic panels but also a fully prefabricated sub-structure and a detailed layout template. These tools streamlined on-site labor and ensured precision, allowing the contractor to stay on track with the project timeline.

Industry: Wellness and Event Venues

Background:

Nestled in the serene mountains of Los Angeles, the Luna Dome is a stunning 40-foot transparent pavilion designed to foster wellness, creativity, and connection. With its frameless design, the geodesic dome offers panoramic views of the surrounding forest and mountains, providing an idyllic setting for sound baths, acoustic concerts, and restorative retreats.

However, while the Luna Dome’s design celebrated natural light and seamless integration with nature, the sound reflective nature of its walls interfered with the sound-sensitive events held within.

Challenge:

The Luna Dome faced significant acoustical challenges:

• Reflection Issues: Domes, especially when 100% reflective, will cause sound to behave erratically – reverberation, focusing effects and creep can make it difficult to achieve the peaceful ambiance required for events.
• Preserving Natural Light: Any solution needed to maintain the dome’s 360-degree panoramic views and abundant natural light.
• Invisible Integration: The acoustical treatment had to blend seamlessly with the minimalist, transparent architecture of the dome.

Solution:

To address these challenges, Kevin Sanford of Solotech Inc. partnered with the Luna Dome team to integrate RPG Acoustical Systems’ Clearsorber® Foil into the pavilion’s design. This innovative solution offered a perfect balance of acoustical performance and architectural preservation.

Industry: Hospitality – Private Country Club Facility

Background:

The Boca Bay Pass Club, an exclusive private country club in Southwest Florida, faced consistent feedback from members regarding excessive sound levels in its multi-purpose restaurant space during peak occupancy. Known for its stunning design and panoramic coastal views, the club needed a solution to reduce the sound levels without detracting from the beautiful view of the dunes and the ocean through (6) large glass multi-door bays. Seeking a balance between function and form, the club turned to RPG’s Clearsorber® Foil as a solution that could be tailored to its unique needs.

Challenge:

The challenge was multifaceted. The club needed a system that could:

• Effectively reduce loudness and reverberation during peak occupancy, creating a more enjoyable dining atmosphere.
• Preserve the breathtaking views provided by the floor-to-ceiling windows.
• Be easy to use and integrate seamlessly into the existing design.
• Meet fire safety standards with clear, visually unobtrusive materials.

Solution:

Siebein Associates was independently contracted by the club to evaluate the acoustics of the dining room and provide management with solution options. The Louis Armstrong House Museum, a historic landmark, preserves the legacy of the world-renowned jazz musician Louis Armstrong. In 2021, the museum undertook a significant renovation of its “Jazz Room,” a space dedicated to enhancing the visitor experience with an intimate and immersive atmosphere reflecting Armstrong’s iconic sound and influence.

To achieve superior acoustics and visual harmony in the Jazz Room, Caples Jefferson Architects PC collaborated with Creative Acoustics to create a space where sound, history, and design meet. RPG was selected to provide acoustic treatment solutions to optimize the auditory environment while maintaining the room’s aesthetic appeal.

The Jazz Room required precise acoustic control to authentically reflect the sounds of jazz while preserving the historical integrity of the space.
