The new Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts, located in Columbus, Georgia, now has a state of the art performing arts facility. Designed by Hecht Burdeshaw Architects, Inc. and acoustically engineered by Siebein Associates, Inc., the main auditorium is wrapped and capped in a premium grade, engineered acoustical wood system manufactured by RPG Acoustical Systems. The facility, which places an emphasis on the specialized learning of performers and artists, has a capacity for around 500 middle and high school students who will be pursuing the arts this school year.
AWI Premium Grade Custom Millwork Meets High Performance Acoustics
Integrating all of the key elements of acoustical design; sound absorption for general reverberation control, diffusion and reflection for blending, envelopment and enhancement, bass management for low frequency optimization—the new auditorium is a breathtaking visual and auditory experience and a place where performances of all levels will shine at their brightest for years to come. No acoustical manufacturer has the experience from research and development through manufacturing and application with curvilineal acoustic product designs as RPG. Custom Waveform Monoradials wrap from telescoping arrays at the proscenium around the entire space, and include perforations in select areas as directed by the acoustician’s design. The audience canopy, also comprised of Monoradials, is a multitasking system that not only solves a host of acoustical issues presented in large space designs but does so while integrating with and concealing the many other systems that are required in performance spaces such as the sound system and accessibility for lighting , sprinkler, and mechanical systems. Matching knee-walls, caps and custom wall returns all contribute to an elegance that is rarely experienced in a primary education facility.
Cultivating Stars
The development of the Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts has lasted for 17 years—in fact, Columbus was one of the largest cities in Georgia without a dedicated school of the arts until the Rainey-McCullers school opened up this past fall, just in time for the new school year. Because the facility serves as a flagship project for the city of Columbus, the development of the 118,500 square foot facility sought out truly the best elements of design—including acoustical design for its dedicated band, chorus, and orchestra spaces, as well as its two dance studios. The Columbus school is home to students from the 6th through 10th grades, and in the coming years, will add capacity for 11th and 12th grade students as well. The goal of Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts is to provide the same rigorous academics that the rest of the state does while also placing an emphasis on the arts. This means that future artists, musicians, dancers, and so on will potentially pass through the doors of the facility. Having facilities with top-notch acoustical design in place will help them hone their skills and live up to their potential, something RPG Acoustical is proud to have a hand in.
