Challenge
Caymus Suisun Valley Winery, in collaboration with Cello & Maudru Construction Company, sought a solution for their unique architectural challenge. They envisioned both their interior and exterior wood ceilings to have a seamless match. While the interior demanded acoustical performance, the exterior did not. The design intricacies included sloped ceilings with angled intersections, which called for precision in plank system manufacture and installation.
Solution
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architects took the lead in selecting the Perfecto Micro perforated planks with tongue & groove edges for a seamless ceiling installation.
The architects brought RPG on board to collaborate and customize the exact aesthetic they envisioned. RPG’s specialized turning clips were utilized to ensure the planks were securely and accurately installed, showcasing a tailored solution that met the high standards of the project.
Micro-perforated wood planks are ideal for spaces where many people will gather and generate conversational sound energy. The unique attributes of this solution target the mid-range frequencies where the power of speech lives, predominantly the vowel sounds – those are the frequencies that fill our spaces with sound and cause issues with loudness and reverberation. At the same time, they slowly taper off the amount of absorption as you get into the higher frequencies, where the subtleties of speech exist, the consonants and the nuance. Those higher frequencies don’t have much energy, and leaving some of it in the space leads to a natural ambiance to the space. This creates an environment that isn’t too loud yet doesn’t “feel” quiet. We enjoy this blend of control and support in our environments; it gives us the environmental cues our brains are looking for, such as a sense of what the space is around us, where sounds are coming from, and exactly what they are.
Project Goals & Deliverables
- Establish a harmonious and consistent ceiling appearance for both the interior and exterior, accentuated by the glass walls that offer a transparent view from one side to the other.
- Implement acoustical absorption within the interior using the perforated Perfecto Micro planks.
- Assure the exterior’s resilience by incorporating an exterior-rated performance core material.
